I qualified as a Doula with Nuturing Birth in 2012.
I have much experience in this and take great knowledge and experience from my many years working as a Midwife and as a mum to Charlie 7yrs, Alfie 3yrs and as step mum to Leah 22yrs and Carys 19yrs. I offer both in person Doula Support and also Remote Doula Support.
Benefits of a Doula
Research has shown that having a doula present at a birth ;
- Shortens first-time labour by an average of 2 hours
- Decreases the chance of caesarean section by 50%
- Decreases the need for pain medication
- Helps fathers participate with confidence
- Increases success in breastfeeding
What is a Doula?
Doula \DOO-luh\ is an experienced and trained person who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth. A doula believes in “mothering the mother” – enabling a woman to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during pregnancy, birth and the early days as a new mum. This type of support enables the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience, in the knowledge that the Doula is there taking care of the fine detail and practical side of things. More and more these days people live long distances from their families, who traditionally would have been around to offer support, a Doula takes on this supportive role, both practically and emotionally.
Birth can be a positive, satisfying and empowering experience for women and their partners. Having a baby is the most precious, life-changing time and all too often parents come away from it feeling traumatised and disappointed by their experience. I think that every woman deserves emotional and practical support before, during and after childbirth and believe that having doula support can give you the experience you hope for.
In preparation for the birth I offer at least two antenatal appointments to talk through any previous births (if applicable), your hopes, fears and expectations of the labour ahead. We look at the physiology of birth and gain an awareness of all the options that are available to you during pregnancy, birth and once your baby has arrived. Together we will put together some birth preferences, allowing for the unpredictability of labour, but ensuring that your desires/needs are met and realised. We will spend time looking at the options available to you and your partner. I will be on call 24 hours a day once you reach 38 weeks pregnancy. At times I may require the back up of a second Doula to ensure we can ensure cover to you. I would of course encourage you to meet with this Doula during the antenatal period and make sure you are happy with this.
Once in labour I will be in constant attendance to give you confidence, help you make informed decisions, facilitate communication between you and the trained staff, remind you of your wishes and to support both you and your partner. I will stay with you after the birth until mother and baby are settled, feeding happily. I am very experienced both in home and hospital birth and am happy to support you in your chosen place of birth.
I may discuss with you options of involving a second Doula to ensure complete cover during your on call period. There would of course be an opportunity to meet with the Doula and ensure you are happy with this arrangement.
It is possible to book the entire package which would include Antenatal preparation, Hypnobirthing, Birth Support and Postnatal Support. Alternatively you can mix and match whichever service you are interested in. I can be totally flexible and am happy to discuss your needs and tailor a package of support just for you.
To find out more or to enquire about prices/booking, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call Wendy on 07716 321477
There is no charge for an initial meeting, either at my home or yours. This is such a special time and it is essential that you ‘click’ with the Doula, therefore I recommend you meet with a few doulas to ensure you work with the person most suited to you.
Remote Doula Package
I have worked with many couple’s antenatally that ideally would have liked to book Doula Support for their pregnancy and birth, but finances have made it impossible. I have gone on to support some of these couples remotely, providing a responsive and personal support service during pregnancy, labour and birth.
So why my you want a Remote Doula? My aim to provide the same support, information and resources that I would offer to in person clients. Through the antenatal in person or Skype sessions we will ensure you are prepared, informed and supported. I will answer questions about birth and postpartum options, provide referrals and resources, or just provide a professional sounding board as you work out your decisions. I will always respond in a timely, non-judgmental, and helpful manner.
After these two 1 hr sessions you are welcome to contact me via phone/whatsapp to ask questions, discuss your choices or just to have a chat. This often becomes really useful the nearer the birth when the birth you are planning can at times be questioned by the medical and midwifery teams.
What will you receive:
I will be available to answer your questions and to provide remote support during your pregnancy.
I will be ‘on call’ for remote support two week’s before your due date until after the birth.
I will ensure I am available remotely during your labour and birth to offer support, a listening ear, and as someone who can help you to navigate the midwifery services, ensuring that you can focus on giving birth.
I will support you to keep calm, relax and achieve the birth you would like.
My experience as a Midwife, Doula and Hypnobirthing Practitioner ensure that I can offer you the best support.
